The medical team judges suitability and the number of sessions and volume required individually after assessing skin firmness and the degree of volume loss, as well as the facial structure. Treatment may be restricted during pregnancy or breastfeeding or when there is active infection or inflammation in the treatment area. What Is Sculptra?
Sculptra is not a treatment that 'fills in' lost collagen on the spot — it is a collagen-booster injectable that prompts the skin to make new collagen again. Its PLLA (poly-L-lactic acid) ingredient gradually stimulates the skin's own collagen in the dermis, so firmness, volume and fine lines are cared for from within over several weeks to months after the session. It suits people who prefer a slow, natural improvement over an instant result. Much like adding fertilizer to a garden bed and watching the plants grow on their own over time, Sculptra places an unseen support within the skin so the body fills in its own firmness. The PLLA that acts as scaffolding is gradually absorbed, and what remains is the skin's own collagen.
What to Expect: The Sculptra Treatment Process
1) Consultation & diagnosis: the doctor reviews the skin condition (which may include a skin diagnosis such as Markvu), medical history and any contraindications, then plans the injection sites and dose (such as 4cc).
2) Cleansing & topical numbing: after cleansing, numbing cream may be applied for comfort.
3) Authenticity check: genuine PLLA product is prepared in measured doses for use.
4) Injection: PLLA is placed into the dermis via fine needle across multiple points (injecting across several points helps the product distribute evenly).
5) Finishing: the treated area is cleaned and soothing/recovery care may be applied, and home-care guidance — massage, moisturizing and sun protection — is given for going home. Gentle self-massage of the treated area for a few days is commonly advised (often described as the '5-5-5' routine — 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days); the doctor will confirm the exact technique and frequency.
Actual injection takes about 25 minutes, and depending on the doctor's assessment a short course of medication may be prescribed as a precaution. Series/package structure is explained during consultation.
When Will Sculptra Results Appear — and How Long Do They Last?
Sculptra is not an instant-fill treatment. As is typical of PLLA, any temporary volume seen right after the session subsides within a few days; the visible change then develops gradually over roughly 4–6 weeks as the skin's own collagen is stimulated, and tends to accumulate as sessions are repeated. Because it builds up, the generally recommended protocol is a series of typically 2–3 sessions (sometimes more) spaced about 3–6 weeks apart; the exact interval and number are decided after consultation. The collagen-based result from PLLA is reported to be expected to last up to around 2 years, though this is a general reference only and onset and longevity vary considerably by individual skin condition, lifestyle and dose; the same result is not guaranteed. Because the collagen-building process over the following weeks to months matters more than the procedure itself, keeping up consistent basic home care such as sun protection and moisturizing can help the change settle in. For those visiting Korea for a short period, note that patients will likely return home before the gradual collagen change becomes visible — this is expected with PLLA and does not mean the treatment was unsuccessful. Because sessions are spaced about 3–6 weeks apart, completing a full series during a single short trip may not be possible; if a multi-session plan is recommended, the team can discuss a schedule that fits travel plans, including completing it over future visits. Sculptra is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Treatment may be restricted if there is active infection or inflammation in the treatment area, and please also inform the medical team before treatment if you have a bleeding disorder or are taking anticoagulants, antiplatelet agents, or other medication that can affect bleeding.
After treatment, redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising, or temporary firmness may occur, and in most cases these gradually settle over time. Immediately after treatment, the volume may appear increased due to the injected solution and swelling, but this change may subside; thereafter, changes appear gradually over several weeks as collagen is produced.
Rarely, papules or nodules (palpable lumps) may develop at the injection sites, and these may appear from several weeks to several months after treatment. So that the product is distributed evenly, gently massage after treatment according to the instructions given; the "5-5-5" massage — 5 times a day, 5 minutes each time, for 5 days — is generally recommended. Follow the medical team's guidance on the specific massage method and duration.
For about one to two days after treatment, it is best to avoid activities that can increase swelling and warmth, such as saunas, hot compresses, vigorous exercise, and alcohol. If pain or swelling persists or progressively worsens, if skin colour changes, or if new or long-lasting nodules or other unusual symptoms appear, medical assessment is required.
