Laser hair removal

Hair removal is a wavelength question. Fine, shallow hair and coarse, deep hair need different lasers, and the area of the body changes the plan.

What usually causes it

  1. 01

    Fine, shallow hair (face)

Thin hair close to the surface: cheeks, sideburns, a woman's upper lip, and the fine hair that keeps pores open.

    How we tell them apart

    • Hair is light and thin, visible mostly in sunlight
    • It makes skin look shadowed or makes pores look larger
    • Grows back fast but stays fine
  2. 02

    Coarse, deep hair (male face)

Thick beard hair on the upper lip and chin has deep roots. A shallow wavelength barely touches it.

    How we tell them apart

    • Hair is thick and dark
    • A shadow shows within hours of shaving
    • Ingrown hairs after shaving

    What we'd suggest, by cause

  3. 03

    Body hair

Arms, legs, underarms, bikini line, back and chest. Roots are deeper and the areas are larger, so 1064 nm and a session plan matter.

    How we tell them apart

    • Coarse hair over larger areas
    • Shaving irritation or ingrown hairs
    • You want a long gap between sessions

Diagnosis comes first

What we look for first is hair thickness, depth and skin tone. Fine facial hair sits shallow and suits 755 nm. Coarse hair on a man's upper lip and chin, and body hair, sits deeper and suits 1064 nm. We check this at the consult rather than using one setting for everyone.

At the Myeongdong clinic a consultant goes through your concern with you, and the Mark-Vu/Meta-Vu scan and report set the plan from there.

Good to know

  • Laser only catches hair in its growth phase, so it takes several sessions spaced out. One visit thins; it does not finish.
  • On a short trip, one session is a start, not a finish. Ask how the spacing works before you plan around it.
  • Shave before a session. Do not wax or pluck; the laser needs the root in place.
  • Tanned skin and hair removal do not mix well. Mention any recent sun.

Common questions

  • Is it permanent?

Long-term reduction is the honest term. Hair gets finer and sparser over a series. Some maintenance is normal, and hormones can bring some back.

  • Does it hurt?

Rubber-band snaps, worse on coarse hair and bony spots. Cooling is used. Most people find the face easier than the bikini line.

  • Can I get hair removal and pore treatment together?

Often yes, because fine hair is one of the causes of enlarged pores. Removing it is sometimes the whole pore fix. See the pores guide.

Other concerns

Results vary from person to person. A doctor decides on treatment after examining you, and nothing on this page is a promise of outcome.
